Open House

An inconspicuous row house of the nineteen thirties accommodates a new residence. This old house makes place for the new living wishes of the current inhabitants. The task was to create a studio and a library in the existing house, between which the function living would be fulfilled. To make the house suitable for the modern way of living, the house was stripped completely. All the walls and floors were demolished, which only left two facades and two construction walls. The closed character of the old house disappeared and transformed into a spatial house with the desired day lighting and sight lines. 

To improve the quality of the studio and kitchen on the ground floor, the back facade was extended. By opening the complete back facade by two enormous doors, the garden is drawn into the studio. The frame of these doors consist of a steel construction that also supports the beams of the extension. The glass front is completed with an powder coating in a grey color. The roof chapel at the back side is new and has the same proportions as the roof chapel of the neighbor. Remarkable is that the chapel doesn’t seem to have any windows. It only has a roof light to provide the library from day light.
